In this picture, the bottom four wires, the pink one, that is the one wire that releases your tailgate when contacted to frame ground. This is the closest you can get to the wire before it goes into the BCU Computer (Body Management Unit). The ECU controls your engine, the BCU controls almost everything else.

Updated Project Information: I am now concerned that if towing I may accidentally hit the button thus damaging the tailgate or if traveling at speed accidentally hit the button with potential contents in the bed. To resolve my concerns I am going to create a module that goes inline from the button to the harness, this will be very plug and play friendly.

Overall this is what the module will do...

-There will be two of the same connectors on this module for signal wire. So you can choose how the button acts when the vehicle is off. Signal Wire Connector Port 1: When vehicle is off the button is disabled and will not release gate when pressed. Signal Wire Connector Port 2: When vehicle is off the button will immediately drop the gate with no delay.

-When the vehicle is on it will require the button be depressed for at least 1 second before releasing the Gate. Any press less than one second will do nothing to prevent accidental presses.

-When vehicle detects you are towing the button will not drop the Gate when button is Pressed. Though the button will still be Illuminated.

-When vehicle is in motion the button will not drop the Gate when the button is Pressed.

#I will also make a harness from the module with the same connector as the switch blank connection so you won't have to splice anything for Illumination or Damage the original harness. I will do the same for the connector that plugs into the computer so you don't have to splice the pink signal wire. This will be very plug and play friendly, the only thing for you to do would be find ground to frame connection. When I finish the [Safe Liftgate Release Adapter and Module] project I am willing to make more available to sell if there is any interest. I can also make oem style momentary switch buttons with the same face design I did for my project if you'd like.
