    Afternoon ladies & gents,

New here, just picked up my 22 Tundra about a week ago.

Ever since seeing a 22 with the digital cluster, I've been wondering if it will be a plug & play swap? or if there is more involved? I doubt anyone knows at this point in time, but I figured I'd put it out there and see.

I would highly doubt it'll just be plug and play. From 2nd to 2.5 gen there were wiring changes made to the cluster. I'd expect the same for 3rd gens.

I see your point, but that's a generational change, this is the same gen, same production line. I'd figure it would be an additional module at most, most likely not a whole different harness (or wiring).

You have to have the dealer do it if anybody because they would have to verify the odometer is correctly written from your vehicle into the new one and the new instrument panel would have to be adapted to the vehicle in general on the back end

Not necessarily. ODO mileage is typically stored in the onboard vehicle computer nowadays to prevent odometer fraud, usually it's no longer stored in the cluster itself.

There's a story about a guy who took an all-digital gauge cluster from a Ford Escape and dropped it into his new Ford Maverick as an upgrade. Everything populated correctly on the screen (data wise) except for one thing...the gas reading was screwy. And, of course he was getting phantom warning lights because the cluster was looking for data from various sensors that were on the Escape that his Maverick didn't have so it was throwing phantom warning lights.

In the reading the story, and learning more about all-digital gauge clusters, it seems they're more just a screen nowadays rather than actually storing information in the cluster itself.

    https://www.mavericktruckclub.com/f...ter-from-ford-escape-swap-into-maverick.9506/

So...I can see it actually being possible one day that it might be a drop in upgrade.

Intersting. Typically things of this nature need to be adapted otherwise the immobilizer goes active and results in a no start condition.

All hybrid trims come with the digital display, at least in Canada. Does that mean it's likely an easy swap?

Probably easier to sell your truck and buy one with the other cluster.

That’s kinda what I’m thinking, assuming it would be a quick swap. It’s going to be interesting to see in the coming months.

Seriously, especially right now when parts are scarce…I wouldn’t go cutting into a factory wiring harness unless you’re a glutton for punishment.

as no one has mentioned, the cost for a replacement oem digital cluster will probably cost more than the loss on the trade in. i am doing a rough ball park, but the cost for a replacement is probably going to be 3-5k for the part not including the labor to remove and install the new one.

and the biggest issue will be, can you get a toyota dealer to actually perform the swap. i am betting no one will touch that from a toyota dealer stand point.

All Toyotas 2007-2021 store the mileage in the cluster. Odometer reprogramming is not that hard. The data is stored on a chip in the cluster.

I think it could be an easier swap than most realize. I run a 2015 cluster in my 2007 currently. Wiring was the same just in different pin locations.

Almost all the data feed into the cluster comes from the Can Bus, your trucks without the digital cluster most likely have all the info needed for the digital cluster at the wiring plug.

Hard part is finding a digital cluster so soon. If I see one I will buy it for benchtop experimenting.

Are the 2022 wiring diagrams out yet?

For reference on the 2014-2021 cluster the fuel, voltage, oil pressure are analog. Everything else is digital from the CAN bus.

I mean I was thinking I’d swap it myself but yeah I wouldn’t be doing any cutting into the harness if that’s what it requires but I highly doubt it would.
Yup, 2nd gen and 2.5 was in the cluster, that I know for certain, I had to swap the cluster in my 2017 at one point. Hopefully it’s the same setup in the new trucks. That makes for simpler programming. But as you said, hard part is sourcing one so soon

If Toyota moved the ODO value to be stored in the body control ecu that would make the swap easier. No extra step of programming ODO, the cluster would just read it from the truck.

I always heard people talk of ECUs being VIN locked but I have plugged 4 different cluster into my 2007 (several 2014-2017 and one 2018+) and they all worked. Tech steam list the cluster as it’s own ecu but I have not found one yet to be “VIN locked”

I would love to get my hands on a 2022 digital cluster. Wouldn’t take much testing and I would have the answers for you.

Here is some work I have done with the 2014-2017 cluster, all controlled from my laptop. https://youtu.be/kTvmovRE8No

wow, very cool! I’m going to speak to my parts dept this weekend, I’ve gotta head over there and try and get some running boards anyway. I’ll see if they can even find the p/n for the digital cluster.

    Analog/center screen cluster.

Plugs look the same. Just reversed.

Consider reaching out to WAMS and see if they could do anything. I came from a 2020 Silverado and this type of swap was VERY common. The mileage on Chevys was stored in one of the BCMs and only engine hours was stored in the cluster. The swap allowed people to not only get a digital cluster from Denali/High Country models but also unlocked a lot of functionality.

At a minimum, you will need Global Techstream. An ECU Key Update is needed in order for the new cluster to function correctly in regards to service data, etc.

Everyone said it would be smarter & cheaper to trade in my truck when I wanted to switch my 8in screen to the 14in screen. I got mine on Ebay for $600 and I installed it in less than 20 minutes. Plug and Play.

Maybe....maybe not. Judging by the looks of the plugs on the back it looks to be the same. Maybe have to have an update like Ryan said but doesn't seem that intensive as ppl originally thought.

Yes, everything worked as it should, including remote start. My trial ended so I honestly dont even use the app much at all anymore.

I'm hoping someone would've cracked it by now. I almost bought a cluster to just try myself.
