So, it looks like Discount Tire is coming through big on a price match for some Nokian Outpost AT tires. Their site price is $341 a tire for LT 285/65R18; Amazon and Walmart both have the same size tire for $237.63. Yes, that's going from $1364 before taxes to 950.52 before taxes! I figured I'd run it through their 'Found it Lower?' service and see what happened. Worst I figured is they could say no. Instead, they said 'Sure, we'll match that!' So I called the local store to get them on order.

The light weight of the Nokians caught my attention when they were released, as well as the slightly deeper tread depth and Nokian's reputation for making good winter tires. The Aramid fiber reinforced carcass (same stuff used in some ballistic armor/protection applications) is a nice touch and probably contribute to the lighter weight of the tire. So I figured I'd give them a whirl. For the price, I couldn't say no. I wouldn't say they are the most attractive tire judging by the stock photo, but closeups of the tire posted by individuals appear to have more beef. And if they have the chops to put up with my use, that's what counts.

I debated between a few sizes offered by DT, all LT tires - 275/65R18, 275/70R18, 285/65R18, 285/75R18, and 295/70R18. They are all surprising lightweight, so I was tempted to go with one of the two larger sizes - 290/70R18 being the same price as the 285/65R18 before price match. But the 275/70's were very affordable and I've run that size before. However, I've wanted to run 285/65's for a while but they became less available than the other sizes and more expensive. So after looking around and finding a crazy good price on that size, I figured I'd see if they would price match. Tires are on order and should hopefully show up next week sometime.

Nice Discount did that. Our Discount has always treated us and everyone around us very well.

When it comes to our next set of tires, these Nokians are on the short list.

    Welp, never mind...

DT just emailed me this morning to say the Nokian Outpost is discontinued. Hmm..?? I thought they were a new offering released in the last two years. Either way, they said there aren't any tires available nationwide in the size I ordered. Darn. Oh well. Guess I'll run these AT3's down to nothin' then go shopping again.

Right?!? I responded to their email, politely noting as much. We'll see what they say, but I doubt they will respond - not because they have poor CS but simply because I don't think they will elaborate. On their site, they offer most of the Outpost AT tire sizes that Nokian lists on their website. I'm almost tempted to try and order a set from DT Online and see if they show up..

I do believe its legit - im running their Rotiva AT plus version now and had a flat couple weeks back and my shop barely found a replacement for me, due to the fact the "Newer" Outpost is what replaced my Rotiva's.
During that transaction the shop manager told me the Outposts were also discontinued, but they were trying to bring back the Rotiva's, if I understood him correctly.

The shop i goto, their "house tire" is Nokian. We shall see how this plays out.

Might want to look at these, I just ordered a set to replace my OEM Michelins that are developing sidewall cracking after exactly 6 years and 41K miles.
    https://www.tirerack.com/tires/vredestein-pinza-at
$251 delivered for 275/65-18 in LT (120/123). Rated #1 in by TireRack. Vredestein has been making tires for over 100 years in European market, I’ve run them on sports cars and very pleased with them. This is their first venture into North American market. Also make a highway tread.

Thanks for the tire suggestions. Luckily, my current set of AT3’s meet my needs very well and still have some good tread on them. I was just window shopping for the perfect unicorn tire that offered exceptional winter traction, good off-road traction and toughness, great road manners, and light weigh to mitigate the fuel penalty of heavy tires if I decided to upsize. Oh, and not cost $400 each. The Outpost AT seemed to check all those boxes and offered lots of size options. I’ve got several months of useable tread left on my tires but saw the great price and figured I’d take a chance on something new and different that I don’t see a lot of info about. Was hoping to be able to provide some feedback on their new offering.

I absolutely love everything about my cheap as hell Kanati Trail Hog ATs that I got from Simple Tire, everything except the road noise is loud AF!!! I’m used to it now but when in a tunnel I can hear it again. Many would hate it, but I’m pretty aloof. My wife gets pissed when I forget to turn off the wipers when the rain stops. Yeah, I mean really aloof. But if you’re like me and won’t notice it, they’re awesome in every other way. Look great (lots of compliments), have been awesome off road and on, dry or wet pavement, snow, all that. Did I mention the noise? And for those who care, I think they’re out of Kentucky but their headquarters online says Anaheim (https://www.greenballtires.com/)

A quiet tire is high on my priority list - just under winter and off highway traction. I get a fair amount of seat time and I prefer not to arrive at my destination already road weary from too much tire noise. I’m fact, I returned my Toyo AT3’s because they buzzed above 40 mph so much that it bothered me on highway drives.

I followed my Toyo AT3s with these and they’re def worse. Best to avoid. I regularly go several thousand mile trips and don’t care much, but ima rare breed

Haha. I hear ya. 10 years ago I prolly wouldn’t have cared much either. But I guess things change and I feel like I’m becoming an old man or something. I still have a Super55 muffler but even thinking about super40’s makes me cringe. I also added sound deadened so you only hear the exhaust when you are on it. So when tires are noisier than the exhaust it gets aggravating I guess. The exhaust note changes as I drive since I’m rarely on flat ground, but the tires just him away unless I change speed.

I wonder if this is because of the new nAT which means it's made in North America?

That is my supposition as well. Though, I’ve only seen three or four sizes of the new nAT available online. I’m just a little perturbed that the site shows all of the sizes as available when, in fact, they are not.

    UPDATE

I spoke with one of the guys at my local Discount Tire today and asked him to hunt down a set of Outpost NaT's for me. 30 minutes later, he called me back to let me know the tires were already en route to their supply warehouse four hours away and should be there tomorrow. He told me that this is the first batch DT has received and that they are so new that pricing isn't available yet. His regional or corporate contact will call him back in the next day or two with pricing. Judging by Simple Tire's pricing on the tire right now, it looks like the price has increase $50 or so since last year's iteration was discontinued.

Am I a dirtbag if I ask him to price match Simple Tire?

Anyways, Nokian is rolling these out with limited tire sizes, but they have managed to make a stock size LT275/65R18 available; I believe that LT275/70R18 is also available. I plan on running a stock size again. Yup, I know, lame. But big tires cost me too much in the long run. If all goes according to plan, I should hopefully have a new set of shoes next week sometime!

Nice! I've been watching for these in the stock Taco Pro size as I would love to support them for making them in The States. Let us know how they go!

Will do. You and I see similar weather conditions so I’m hoping they will shine when the white stuff starts flying. Supposed to get down in to the low 20’s at night next week. Bleh.

They should get them in early next week. Woohoo!

Oof! Been a while since I've bought tires. Are we really up to $250+ a tire for ATs?:eek2:

Sadly, yes. And that’s $40 LESS than its leading competitors like Cooper AT3, Toyo AT3, General Grabber ATx, and Firestone XT. Ya, I know, ridiculous. I think I paid $220 a tire for my Big O AT’s and then Cooper AT3 XLT’s. Pretty sure my last set of Cooper AT3 LT’s were 270 a tire, as were the Toyo AT3’s that DT swapped out for me and replaced with the Coopers. I was fully expecting to spend $300 a tire this go round for either the Firestone XT’s or Wrangler Ultra Terrains, so, yeah, I jumped on on $265 a tire.

Oh, and I’m pretty sure that with the exception of the most recent set of Coopers, that price included install. Now install is additional…

Yikes. I think the Falken Wildpeak AT3W tires I bought were going for $230-$235 for the 275/70R18 size when I bought them, but I lucked out and got a screamin' deal from wallyworld online. I think they typoed, but they honored it at $156ish IIRC. Best tires for the money at that price, but a total fluke.

And I should update the tire pic, too. I like the smooth sidewall and broader tread of this newer version. It does look a bit like a Falken, but without the weight penalty..

Got a call from DT today - my tires arrived! :bananadance:

So I setup an appointment to have them installed at their very next available opening. Which is Saturday... :annoyed: Guess that's what happens when we are supposed to get the first snow of the season this week.

That's ok, though - I really should be productive this week anyhow. And at least the tires ACTUALLY SHOWED UP THIS TIME. Ha.

Just replaced my tires on my 2019 1794 edition with the 20" wheel option.. (60k on the OEM Bridgestones.. never great in the snow).

Got a killer deal on Cooper AT3s in the 275/55/R20 size... in New England... $224 before tax/installation. was thinking Falken Wildpeak ATS.. but they were $60 plus more per tire. Super quiet and good in the rain... we'll see about the snow (3 snowflake rated). Perhaps a little less aggressive tread for the offroaders.. but seemingly perfect for my pavement queen!

    Cheers...

How are those outposts doing? Road noise, winter traction, etc? That tread depth is impressive!
