I swapped the engine in my 2008 Tundra and now I am getting codes P0300, P0301, P0303, P0305, P0307, and P0016. The timing chain on the replacement engine was replaced. When we first got the error codes above, we thought we were off a tooth on the timing so we took the timing chain back apart and retimed it verifying we matched everything back up properly. We have tested the VVT solenoid on the driver side and the cam shaft position sensor. When the engine first starts, it runs smoothly and doesn’t throw any codes. After about 20-30 seconds it will start to idle down and throw the P0016 code first before throwing the misfire codes. The engine will start to run rough with the misfires. We will reset the codes and this process will repeat itself.

Could it be a bad camshaft phaser? Is there a way to test and rule that out?

I would like to know this as well. Just replaced timing chain and everything associated with it. Will start up and run fine for about a minute or so, then idle rough and start throwing P0016, P0300, P0301, P0305. Have no idea what is causing it. The timing and everything was triple checked before putting covers and everything back on. I did replace the bank A camshaft phaser. Wondering if it could be that??

    Hi Randy,

When you replaced the camshaft phaser, was that an OEM part or aftermarket part?

This weekend, we plan to swap the phaser for bank A and will report back if that fixed the issue.

I bought an 08 tundra with a blown motor and another 08 that was wrecked but had a good running motor. While I had the motor out I thought it would be a good idea to swap the timing chain. Ended up being a good idea as one of the tensioners was almost worn out.

Hey Mythalas. I replaced it with an OEM part. I have since got all my problems fixed after talking to a buddy's friend whos a toyota mechanic. With the high mileage (210000), he asked if I have ever cleaned or changed my injectors. I have only put cleaner through my fuel occasionally, but never replaced.
I pulled all my injectors and replaced them with new ($120). Fired it up, and it runs smooth and NO Codes!! Have run it about 120 miles with No issues. Hope this can help you.

A little off topic but @Mythalas did you use a cherry picker to remove the engine? If so, where were your mount points? I’m trying to figure out how to hoist my engine.

    Hey Cruzer,

We used 2 bolts that screw into the top of the engine and ran them through chain and used that to lift the engine out of the truck.

    Here’s an update.
This last weekend we swapped the cam phaser for bank A. So far it has not thrown any codes and is running smoothly.

One thing to note. Prior to swapping the cam phaser, we used an Autel MX808 scanner and the live data for the bank A timing would not read below 13 degrees at idle. (Viewing this same datapoint on another 2008 Tundra showed the timing continuously adjusting around and below 13 degrees at idle.) After swapping the cam phaser, it’s reading was mimicking the other Tundra and the timing for bank A was continuously adjusting around and below 13 degrees at idle.

Thanks Randy for your input, if the cam phaser swap didn’t work, we would have tried the injectors.
