I just picked up a STIHL MS 500i with a 28” bar. I let you guys know how it does once I get around to using it.

I have a Stihl I use for trees and an Echo pole saw i use for trimming up. Love them both and have had no issues.

My advice for general power tool usage is use who is serviced/sold near you. There are a ton of good options and I dont hate on much of anything, it comes more down to convenience and accessibility.

I've had a few Stihls as well. I just gave my 550 to a friend that has a wood burning stove. He has chewed through several chords of wood this year alone.

Dangit. I’ve been having the itch to buy a bigger saw and seeing this thread revived isn’t helping. I’ve still got the two Husky 61’s, I switched them over to a diet of Aspen fuel a while ago and they both run awesome on it with no worries of gummed carbs and ethanol issues in their under-used lives. But I still want a 80+ cc beast, for no particular reason at all.

That 500i is a serious saw.

I use a MS400C-M for anything that resembles real wood, but use my little Milwaukee M18 Hatchet with 8” bar more than I ever dreamed I would. Especially when running my PTO chipper on the tractor.
    For tree work, I have a big extendable 4-stroke Stihl 133 with a 14” bar. It’s a beast!

I started out with a brand new Stihl MS 290 Farm Boss way back around the turn of the century. About 10 years later i removed the 290 piston cylinder and swapped on a 390 cylinder kit (OEM). I ended up selling that saw and buying the last of the Stihl 440 Magnums. i was severely underwhelmed by the saw and promptly sold it about 2 cords later. I replaced it with a MS 180, 362, and 660 Magnum. I usually fell, skid, buck, split, and stack about 6 cords a year for my parents. This year i’m right about 17 cords so far. I just picked up a new Stihl MS 261 (carb version) with a lil’ 16” bar. I’m absolutely in love with that saw. The power to weight ratio is pretty amazing, and the shorty bar makes it very well balanced. The narrow kerf chain and the short bar are awesome for limbing down trees and bucking the smaller diameters up. The saw cuts faster than my 660!

Not a lot of corn to feed a fella in the North Plains area. That’s more of a Midwest deal! I’m not sure where Whodatschrome grew up, but we’ve definitey got some hard working, good people out here in Western Oregon.

It’s the only way we can keep the rest of the weirdos we have from destroying everything!

The one Husqvarna I own. 440e. Guy on Facebook marketplace said if I could get the bar on I could have it for free. Issue was build up behind the chain brake strap, so the brake was “on” by a couple millimeters, preventing the cover from going on. Little bit of scraping and I got a free saw
bought a mount from Amazon to keep it on the truck. Just fits under the Diamondback cover

Don't get too hung up on the name of your saw, (or any other product).
If it's not a pro saw for logging or competition, the manufacturing was likely farmed out to a company like Poulan, etc, to make all the saws sold in US box stores.

My favorite is the Stihl MS250 for all around action. I use a MS362 for larger things. 4 acres of natural cleanup and 80 acres clearing out beetle kill.

Did the same mistake with my Rancher 460. Apparently you are only supposed to take the cover off with the brake disengaged.

Nope, parents rarely fed me corn. I wish i did sometimes. Many of the rounds that i’m picking up weigh a lot more than i do! 6’ and I scale in at 161lbs when fully hydrated, and a few pounds less towards the end of a work day. I grew up on a farm out in the hills North of North Plains. My parents heated the house mostly with firewood. So when my sister and were young (starting around 8 years old), whenever we would get in trouble we would have to load the the farm truck (78 F250 4x4) up with firewood at the barn, then restack it out at the house. It was like that for years and years. Looking back it seems like my parents would purposely make us get into trouble so that we would have to stack firewood! Anyhow, through their mind control conditioning, still to this day i get firewood for them.

Yep. Almost lost his leg. Sad part is he was working for a tree removal business that wasn't operating 100% legit. So no workmans comp (they said he was seasonal help) or medical coverage. Now he is without work and a rather large medical bill.

Man some of y'all do chainsaws like I do 3rd brake light housings......

I don't do any heavy duty tree chopping. We call in an arborist to keep the canopy healthy in our backyard. They were super helpful in bringing a White Oak back from the brink for us last year. Plus they "cut" me a killer deal to do 3 trees and some cleanup.. Afterwards, I got a case of beer and the crew killed it with me.

Here is what I use. Already had the battery so it was a no brainer to buy another tool that could use it (if purchased separately, the battery costs as much, sometimes more, than the actual tool).

    Screenshot_20240423-114819.png

It's surprisingly effective on larger diameter trunks. I cut a piece off a downed Pine and it was probably about 2 ft across. Holds a charge really well too. The other tool I use the battery on is a weed whacker and I can do both yards without any sign of power loss.

I'm glad to hear that he's recovering quickly! Did you happen to find out the root cause of the injury? I'm not interested in throwing blame or anything like that. What i'm interested in knowing is how to learn from his incident. Fatigue after a long day? Kickback? Obviously, he has chainsaw experience in the past, otherwise a tree service company (even an under the table company) wouldn't have hired him in the first place.

Second question, what's his tattoo going to look like after his leg heals up the rest of the way? If it were me, i'd probably get a tattoo of a chainsaw over the scar. And speaking of scar, it's going to take some doing to break up all that scar tissue once his leg is healed.

He was up in a tree when it happened, but I can't remember what was the root cause. Not wearing his protective chaps is a big one.

The tattoo of a chainsaw is a great idea. That is probably the least from his mind with all the bills he has. I guess my oldest daughter could do it. She likes to do tattoo design. she is 14 in that picture from last year.
