A toddler can be taught no. A toddler can be potty trained.

Per the dog's ability to understand and follow commands. It's the same cognitive testing that is done with children, and dogs perform to the same degree that an average 2-2.5 year old child does.

You don’t have kids. Have you ever tried to teach a 2 year old “no”?

I don't have my own, but raised my sister's while she was in prison. So, yes. I've been a parent, I've just not reproduced.

You may want to continue your google search a bit...

I'd start w/FIU (Florida International University) and spend some time reading the papers of Dr. Ken Furton, and you can also read through SWGDOG (Scientific Working Group on Dog and Orthogonal Detector Guidelines) which is focused on detection animals, but has an extensive amount of discussion/research on extinction training and why dogs that have been trained to detect an order can not be used (legally as in for Search Warrant purposes) when the agency no longer wants the dog finding something (IE>> MJ). Operant conditioning tells us that we can 'extinguish' learned behavior to a degree, but not to the point of probable reliability (PC) due to instincts, first learned behavior, original reinforcement schedules, drives, etc... A cognitive animal would be able to understand and respond to the process w/greater reliability and efficiency.

We're not talking ingrained training here. This is initial training, so it would fall under "first learned behavior", and he has learned it. He knows I don't want him to pee on the truck. That's why he will only on a rare occasion try to sneak it, and I catch him and he immediately knows that he isn't supposed to.

I 100% believe that dogs are individuals. Breed traits play a huge role, but they are still unique individuals with their own predispositions. Some dogs are not that bright, even if highly trainable, and others are so damn smart you'd swear they could talk if they had the right organic structures in their throats. I only pulled up the google bit to try and keep it in the realm where you seem to firmly hold dogs, and not delve into any kind of personal beliefs.

Again, agree to disagree on what level of intelligence dogs possess and are capable of.

I used to think that was a super accurate line, but now.... not so much. I've met and read about too many people who are dumb all on their own. A person can be smart, but I'd never say a person is smart.

My dad's dogs know perfectly well when he tells them to 'go in the house' what he's talking about. You can see their body language as they turn their heads away and actively disobey, because they want to stay outside with 'the pack' (me and dad sitting on the porch). If one of us is walking inside and he says it - in they go. There's a critical mass of commands and complications in commands they can't grasp, but they're smart enough to know when you're correcting their immediate behavior with 'no', and they remember it. But they're also as mischievous as a toddler, and will want to do something just to spite you when you're not there - or sometimes when you are. Plus there's always a struggle for dominance and their place in the hierarchy of the pack, the drive to do things like mark territory, and other wolf behaviors. No university study needed - - you just have to watch one for a few minutes.

    Spot on,

Out for our nightly "Duties" and a golf cart came by with a "Yip-Yip" just jawing away and Riva' stepped over the "Line" when I had made my 2nd

    command.... o_O

Neighbors about "Lost it" when my dog & I proceeded to " Short leash retrain" for the following 15 minutes....:ballchain:

Until the next cart sped by and Riva' simply ignored it

Anyone else spending their Friday morning at Urgent Care?

Week two of this “cold” and I am over it. If the Dr told me I’d be cured by stabbing someone I’d prob do it at this point.

Not really. Just needed to be done. Way better for them to spend a few years with me, and their grandmother, than go into the system for their mother's mistakes. She got her crap together and go them back once she was out.

Wonder if you got the same thing I had at the beginning of the year. Starts as a cold, then turns into a sinus infection and takes a massive dose of antibiotics to clear up. Even after that it's a few weeks of residual crud.

Doc say there are some “strange” viruses going around right now that hit, then you feel better and then they hit again. That sounds like what I had earlier this year.

Running a strep test right now. Guess it’s a problem now in adults around here. I was home all last week and saw exactly two people last weekend. Neither of whom I shared a spoon with. WTF

So, I just noticed that Tyler's Moderator status is only here on Tundras. On TW he's still a peasant like the rest of us. Does that mean he needs to do another round on the casting couch to get full credentials?

It is not hard to train a dog but in order to do that you have to train the owner and there lies the problem… I found my wife was not trainable although it was her idea to train the dog. Did it once, I know what was done and never again. Then the last dog we rescued she said let get this one trained and I started asking her questions about the previous training and she could not answer. So the last dog is much more intelligent than the previous but unfortunately my wife is at the same level as she was before training
